PROJECT OF HEART
Whitefish Lake Indian Residential School
After learning about Indian Residential Schools we began decorating tiles for Project of Heart which is a "hands-on, collaborative, inter-generational, inter-institutional artistic endeavor. Its purpose is to commemorate the lives of the thousands of Indigenous children who died in the Residential School System." (projectofheart.ca) We are decorating our tiles for children who died at Whitefish Lake Indian Residential School and Joussard Indian Residential School in Alberta. When we are done an Elder will perform a smudge ceremony to cleanse the tiles and they will be sent to Alberta and used to promote healing and reconciliation for Residential School Survivors and their families.
We decorated 212 tiles which represents exactly half of the student population at our elementary school. This number is significant because half of the children who attended Indian Residential School in Canada died there.
Tell your teacher about Project of Heart so that you can learn more about the History of Residential Schools and decorate tiles to help with the healing process.
